Magazines & Newsletters

for CAMRA Branches

At Capital, we work with branches of the Campaign for Real Ale up and down the country to provide professional branch magazines. You get a good-looking magazine without the risk.

Here at Capital we know real ale inside out. We love it just as much as you and we’re completely behind the thinking and ethos of the Campaign for Real Ale brand. We want to see it survive and flourish in your area just like all your branch members do.

It is for this reason that CAMRA branches across the UK trust Capital to produce their magazines and newsletters, print their marketing material or produce local guides and ale trails. Our service is unique, flexible and tailored to each branch. Here’s why:

The time spent producing a magazine for your branch can be costly, and with ever-increasing pressures faced by branches, members simply don’t have the time to put together their own magazine. That’s where Capital Media comes in. We do everything for you: the advertising sales, design and print of the finished product. You retain control over editorial to keep it just as local as before.
Our service doesn’t cost a penny and is funded by advertising in the magazine. Each issue is completely free to the reader and there is no risk or cost to the branch in using our service.
We have account managers, advertising experts and designers all in-house – meaning that you don’t have to worry about how the finished product will turn out. We’ll give you a stunning-looking publication without you having to do anything!
If you’d like to work with us on your branch magazine, produce a festival programme or a local Real Ale Guide, please call Derek Graham today on 01636 302 302 or email: derek.graham@thisiscapital.com

Case Study: Lunesdale Drinker

  • The new look Lunesdale Drinker is brighter and more professional

The Lunesdale branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, in Lancaster, were at a critical point with their branch magazine – the Lunesdale Drinker. Previous support had dwindled and because members’ time diminished, the publication became late and advertisers died off too. Before they commissioned Capital Media, it really was make or break time for the branch magazine.
Capital Media were employed to give the magazine a fresh start, a new look and begin to get the advertisers back on the magazine’s side. We were able to promise a guaranteed publication date, doubled circulation to 4000 copies and ensured we responded swiftly. The re-launched issue was put together in just 7 weeks – making us able to meet their publication deadline.
“Lunesdale Branch’s collaboration with Capital Media has been positive in every respect. There are tangible benefits for us in that worries about technical production and finding advertisers have disappeared at a stroke, replaced by a reassuring knowledge that these matters are now in the hands of professionals. Our relationship is characterised by flexibility on the part of Capital Media: options and alternatives are always discussed and they are consistently willing to accommodate our specific wishes in relation to design, production and distribution of the Lunesdale Drinker.

Communications with the firm are excellent – particularly important in the key periods of planning and producing an edition. They clearly value genuine engagement with CAMRA members and understand the specific issues affecting pubs and the trade generally. I have been particularly impressed with the way they so clearly identify with the CAMRA ethos, which is valuable when it comes to discussing editorial copy. They also believe in the personal touch; at each stage of the process we deal with sympathetic individuals rather than a faceless organisation.

The finished product is really impressive and has been universally welcomed and praised. Distributing the new-look Drinker to our pubs gives one a real “lift” because of the way it is received and for the positive image it projects of the branch. Prior to our involvement with a media organisation we were hesitant about involving “outsiders”, but I am delighted to wholeheartedly recommend Capital Media to other CAMRA branches. Now they are very much “insiders,” with whom I anticipate a long and mutually rewarding relationship.”

Allan Willoughby, Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead CAMRA

I would say that the quality of our publication has dramatically improved, to the extent that we have grown both the page count and circulation quantity. The production is now cost-neutral but this is more than offset by the improvements made to many aspects of the magazine. It’s delivered on-time, usually an issue we struggled with when we handled it in-house. Capital’s communications are good and I am impressed by their creative skills. I would recommend Capital Media as valued partner for CAMRA magazine production.
